Heavy Metal 2006
Here’s House of Twelve’s take on the 24 hour comic system, a movie parody based on the classic animated stoner flick Heavy Metal. We did them in about 8 hours (give or take) over the course of an afternoon that also featured a BBQ at my place. I used it as sort of a company picnic where everyone had to work, because I’m a right bastard.

Darryl’s Brick: SPX and it’s aftermath
As I noted last month, Team 12 ELITE Darryl Ayo was nominated for an Ignatz award at the Small Press Expo this year in the category of Most Promising New Talent. Well, he won. Here’s his brick.
Being a nominee also got Darryl an invite to participate in SPX’s new Library of Congress deal (a special collection at the LoC of small press comics), and while the librarian was at the table checking out his stuff, she decided to take every issue of House of Twelve as well. So, for as long as the US exists drawings of my dick will be in the Library of Congress. I couldn’t be more proud, of both Darryl and my dick.
Here’s a video of Ayo doing the jabber-jaw with the SPX TV crew.
And in the aftermath we got some nice coverage from www.spandexless.com, two mentions:
First, a quickie interview with Darryl
and
A pretty great rundown review of House of Twelve#3
Which includes one of my favorite quotes about our books, on “Mengeloid” by David Paleo:
“The art is fantastic, in that it is perfectly grotesque.”
So it’s been a pretty fun month, October is looking out to be fun too with Dave, Brian, Kevin, Miss and I taking part in a Jack Kirby tribute art show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ opening on Oct. 15th (facebook link). Here’s one of my two submissions:
And I leave you with this fun little ditty
Jam on Thursday, SPX on Friday
About time I spilled the beans about our new book for SPX. On Saturday we’ll be debuting the first of hopefully many, House of Twelve Analog Specials. These are limited editions of our digital comics printed in a lovely analog format for your pollybagging pleasure. These full-color digest books are a pleasure to behold, this first issue features stories by Dave McKenna, Nick Jeffery, Darryl Ayo (Ignatz nominee for his work in Ho12) and Kate Lacour with a few spectacular covers by me (Cheese) and Dave. The first issue costs four bucks and will be available first at SPX and then on this site.
Check out the rest of House of Twelve’s wares at the Small Press Expo this weekend (9/10-9/11/ 2011) in Bethesda, Maryland. On hand will be Ho12 Strike Team Bravo, consisting of Diamond Dave McKenna, Mommie Miss Lasko-Gross, Kold Cutting Kevin Colden, Dangerous Animal Darryl Ayo and Cheese. It’s our only show appearence this year, so come on out and give us your money show us some love.
I’ll also have a few posters available! Posters! Who doesn’t love posters! These fine reproductions of the covers of House of Twelve Digital issues #2 and #4 will be available for a five bucks and are absolutely lovely, perfect for framing and make great gifts for moms and grads.
Last but not least, the JAM! The NYC COmic Jam is tomorrow night, come on out and get a sneak peek at the new stuff. And while you’re there, why not have a beer and draw a fart joke? See the Jam’s page for more details.
Darryl’s Ignatz Nomination
Today we found out one of our favorite cartoonists and House of Twelve regular, Darryl Ayo, received a Promising New Talent Ignatz award nomination for his story, “Ghost” which appeared in House of Twelve Monthly #3. The story’s great, Darryl’s great and we couldn’t be happier for him.
The award gala takes place Saturday night, Sept. 10th at the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, MD, where we’ll have a table and promise to be screaming like loons when Darryl wins. Here’s some more info on the awards from SPXPO.com:
The Ignatz Awards, named for the character in the classic comic strip Krazy Kat by George Herriman, is a festival prize that recognizes outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning. The ballot is created by a panel of five cartoonists and is then voted on by the attendees at the event. This offers a unique reflection of the views the professionals and their fans.
Here’s a peek at the story itself:
The rest is available for $2US either through Comixology’s webportal (direct link) or for your mobile device through Comixology’s iOS & Android app, Comics (just search for House of Twelve). Darryl also has a story in House of Twelve Monthly #1, which is free, so you might as well check that one out too, ’cause he’s equally awesome in that too, and so’s everyone else for that matter.
So, congrats to Darryl, he’s been one of my favorite contributors for years, if it were up to me he’d be getting a lifetime achievement award already.
Darryl,
Back pats, golf claps and hat tips from all of us.

Barry on the Doodlestream
About eight years ago I did a short lived strip for the website www.nerdnyc.com, called Barry. It told the hopefully humorous stories of a sexually bizarre, toast-shaped, super-nerdy robot. Recently I came across a folder on an old hard drive that had all the original files on it and seeing that we had just started up the Ho12 Doodlestream, I couldn’t think of a better place to post these somewhat dated, but still reasonably funny web-comics. Check’em out…

The House of Twelve Doodlestream
A date! Finally, a date!
No, this isn’t a post about my social life, but instead about the soon to be released House of Twelve #4 Digital comic! This wonderful cornucopia of indie-comics awesomeness will be released on August 3rd and will be available via Comixology’s mobile app, Comics! PS – Also look for issues 1-3! (Issue #1 is free, so just check it out already!)
Fun little side project
As you might imagine, Team 12 has a pretty deep-seated case of ADHD, meaning while one hand is working at the office, watching TV or pleasuring themselves, the other hand is doodling wildly. This produces a huge volume of sketches, fart jokes, bad ideas, lost gems and slurs of every stripe; the intimate thoughts of an under-appreciated artist (just like Hitler). To give this ever-growing monster a voice, we’ve recently started up the House of Twelve Doodlestream over at tumblr.com. Go on over and check out the latest and greatest in throw-away ideas and drunken gold mines.
Summer’s here, and the time is right…
If you’re like me, I’m sure you’ve sat around, drunk, wondering to yourself, ‘Hey, wha’th’fuck ish up wit’ Houza’twelve?’ Good question, drunky! Here’s what we have lined up for the summer and beyond:
First off, work on the next installment of House of Twelve Digital is almost done. Check out a few pages from Ho12 all-stars Dave McKenna and Kate Lacour.
This issue will also include stories by Rafer Roberts and continue Miss Lasko-Gross’ epic, Henni story. This jam-packed issue will be released this next month.
Also on the horizon: Coming out in time for this years Small Press Expo will be a collection of some of our favorite stories from the digital series in a lovely analog version. Imagine being able to view your favorite House of Twelve digital comics in the classic print format, RETRO!! Of course that means that we will of course, yet again, be at Bethesda’s Small Press Expo, our favorite show of the year.
The biggest project by far will be coming this fall, a new webcomics portal featuring archival comics from Ho12′s decade of print comics as well as newly released strips and ongoing stories from many of your Ho12 fave-rave contributors. Of course, not knowing anything about coding is making this process a bit harder then I had expected, so don’t look for this until September at the earliest (Teaching myself CSS is right up there with quitting smoking in FUN units). We’re still working on the line-up and formats and everything, that’ll all come out in spurts over the summer.
So this summer you’re ordered to get outside a few times, look at a large body of water if you get the chance and remember: wash it before use (common courtesy). Have a good one, see you all soon.

CBR reviews Kate Lacour
A few years back Team 12 super-friend, Kate Lacour, printed up a few copies of her beautiful. full-color comic, Milk-Teeth. From the first moment we put it on a table at a con it started selling out and to this day we can’t keep them on the table. Over the years it’s gotten some raves from Fantagraphics’ FLOG, Comicsreporter.com, Inkstuds, and today from Comics Should Be Good over on Comic Book Resources.
You can also find Kate’s work in House of Twelve #’s 4 & 5 as well as House of Twelve Monthly digital comics issue #2 & the upcoming #4.
Good on her! Check out her Etsy page, she often has comics on it.
House of Twelve Monthly#3
Hey, look! Another House of Twelve Monthly is coming out January 12th, 2011! Sweet!
That’s right, issue #3 of Ho12′s ongoing anthology series explodes onto the Comics app by Comixology (available for your idevice or on the web! Now available for Android too! But I have no idea how to link to their app marketplace!).
This issue kicks off with the continuation of Miss Lasko-Gross‘ epic sci-fi story, “Henni,” (which first appeared in Ho12#1) in which our freethinking, native monkey-girl learns more about her oppressive society, and her place in it.
Then, Sam Henderson‘s Robot Duck from outer space has some questions on human sexuality that need answering, immediately.
Also, Darryl Ayo redefines superhero teams with, “Ghost,” and we close out this month with Xeric winner Nick Jeffrey retelling a harrowing tale of midwestern terror with gags; all wrapped in a lovely Dave McKenna cover. It’s really a nice package.
So you really have no excuse not to sign on to Comics.comixology.com and check it out.
House of Twelve Monthly #3 can be yours right now for the low, low price of $1.99.
Wanna wet your beak? Try House of Twelve Monthly #1! It’s a full-sized issue packed with fun and totally free.
Also available for $1.99 is the beautiful House of Twelve #2 with stories by Fred Noland, David Paleo, Dave McKenna, Kate Lacour and Cheese Hasselberger.
Check out more samples after the jump.
